Abstract
The effects of shoot girdling (at the base of the current years shoot to separate it from the inflorescences), fruit thinning (removal of 50% of the fruit on each branch), and foliar application of zinc and sucrose treatments on inflorescence bud abscission and nut characteristics of pistachio (Pistacia vera L. Ohadi) were investigated in two consecutive years in Kerman province.
The treatments were applied in two different stages of fruit growth and development including: 1- during initiation of rapid growth of seed endosperm and 2- endosperm completion and initiation of rapid seed embryo growth.
According to the results, all treatments decreased the inflorescence bud abscission and increased its dry weight during ON year.
The lowest inflorescence bud abscission and the highest bud dry weight were induced by shoot girdling treatment.
The results of inflorescence bud retention in different time intervals during summer showed that the highest rate and the percen-tage of bud abscission was between 6 July till 6 August during ON year and all the treatments reduced the inflorescence bud abscission rates as well as bud abscission percentage during this period.
It was also shown that sucrose and zinc treatments had positive effects on fruit dehiscence and kernel weight of nuts, so that in most treat¬ments the differences between the treatments and untreated control trees were significant.
Shoot girdling did not have significant effects on the nut characteristics.
