Abstract
Studies of the more prominent pomological characters of selected seedlings were carried out on seven seedlings obtained from free fertilization of cultivar Granny Smith in parallel with this cultivar.
Examinations were conducted in the orchard of PKB Vocarske Plantaze Bolec (in the vicinity of Belgrade). The seedlings were selected among 104 studied ones according to the pronounced traits.
Selection was done on the basis of fruit characteristics as size, chemical composition and ripening time). Six selected seedlings have the same the time of ripening of winter apple cultivars (seedlings registered as 11/34, 1/2, IV/13, 11/28, 111/11), while the seedling IV/9 is of summer ripening time.
The selected seedlings of later ripening time ripened, on average, a week earlier than cultivar Granny Smith. The summer ripening time seedling (IV/9) had lower fruit weight than cultivar Granny Smith, while seedlings of winter cultivars had higher fruit weight than cultivar Granny Smith. The seedlings 1/2 and 1/28 have significantly higher content of fruit soluble dry matter than cultivar Granny Smith, and the other selected seedlings had the same content level of fruit soluble dry matter as cultivar Granny Smith. The selected seedlings also differ from parent cultivar Granny Smith in fruit skin color.
