Abstract
Interspecific hybridization is the breeding trend of lilies.
The OT (Oriental × Trumpet) hybrids section is an emerging horticultural lily section with significant economic value, obtained through distant hybridization and backcrossing, resulting in complex ploidy.
In order to screen out the OT lily cultivars with breeding potential, the ploidy and pollen fertility of 12 cultivars were first identified.
In ploidy, 5 triploids (2n=3x=36) and 7 tetraploids (2n=4x=48) were identified.
Then, to explore the breeding ability of triploid lilies as female parents, the triploid cultivars were used as the female parents to cross with different ploidy lilies, including 3x × 3x, 3x × 4x and 3x × 2x, and seven crosses that could produce embryo seeds were screened.
Finally, the cross of ‘Scheherazade’ (2n=3x=36) and ‘Robert Swanson’ (2n=4x=48) can produce progenies with a chromosome number ranging from 32 to 48, including aneuploidy, triploid and tetraploid, and have rich genetic diversity.
The results showed that triploid lilies could be used as female parents to cross with suitable male parents to produce aneuploid and euploid progenies, which were expected to create new germplasm with rich variation.
In this study, the ploidy and fertility of OT lily cultivars were evaluated, and the law of ploidy breeding was explored, which is of great value for creating new lily cultivars with excellent comprehensive traits.
