Abstract
Rhynchostylis coelestis (Rchb. f.), a beautiful Thai orchid, has tight sepals and petals that are either white or pale blue with purple or blue spots, along with a purple-colored lip. Vanda garayi (Christenson) L.M. Gardiner, which has stiff leaves and orange flowers, is a small monopodial epiphytic orchid.
The study examined the morphological characteristics of intergeneric hybridization between Rhynchostylis coelestis (Rchb. f.) as the female parent and Vanda garayi (Christenson) L.M. Gardiner as the male parent and included 9 quantitative parameters and 69 morphological traits.
After three years and ten months of growing in the greenhouse, the first hybrid plant successfully blossomed in March, 2025, indicating a success percentage of roughly 4%. The height of hybrid plants is short (2.92 cm). The leaves of hybrid plants are flat and entire, measuring 0.94 cm in width × 7.70 cm in length, with 8.80 leaves plant‑1. Racemes of hybrid flowers each contain 13.40 blooms.
The inflorescence is 4.10 cm in width × 6.82 cm in length.
With yellowish-orange and tiny orange-brown tips, the flowers measure 1.73 cm in width × 1.75 cm in length.
The dorsal sepals measure 0.48 cm in width × 0.95 cm in length, the lateral sepals measure 0.65 cm in width × 1.00 cm in length, the petals measure 0.43 cm in width × 0.90 cm in length, and the lips measure 0.43 cm in width × 0.90 cm in length.
These characteristics make them an appealing choice for producing small potted plant orchids.
