Abstract
The bulblets were the most suitable explants for the multiplication of Nymphaea species.
The Murashige and Skoog medium containing different concentrations of plant growth regulators, N6-benzylaminopurine (BA), on shoot multiplication of the purple wild type Nymphaea colorata and its white mutant was investigated.
All explants were cultured in MS liquid media supplemented with 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 mg L‑1 BA for 1 month.
The wild-type purple N. colorata showed the best-improved shoot multiplication at 8.28 shoots plantlet‑1 in MS medium + 3 mg L‑1 BA; while, the white mutant showed the best at 6.83 shoots plantlet‑1 in MS + 1 mg L‑1 BA. In addition, the wild-type purple produced the highest root number at 6.23 roots plantlet‑1 in MS medium + 3 mg L‑1 BA; while, the white mutant produced the highest at 2.24 roots plantlet‑1 in MS medium without BA and MS medium + 1 mg L‑1 BA. The in vitro shoot induction in this study can be used to propagate and maintain N. colorata and its mutant which are rare species in Thailand.
