Abstract
Quality is a general term applicable to any trait or characteristic including degree of excellence (grade), superiority of type, form, color, size or other subjective measurement.
Decisions concerning "quality" are forever present for everyone concerned with the ornamentals industry.
These concerns relate to the perception of quality in the minds of individuals involved in production, sales and consumption of ornamental plant materials.
Producers have their conception of quality which may relate to difficulty of production or appearance, while sales people and consumers may be most influenced by size, price or potential longevity.
The determination of quality should be a cooperative effort rather than a local decision, since consumer desires must be considered along with supply-line decisions.
Although many grading proposals have been presented, few are in general use.
Suggestions are presented on determination of quality based on grading systems for cut flowers, potted flowering plants, and potted foliage plants.
