STUDIES ON THE KEEPING QUALITY OF CUT GREEN RUSCUS HYPOGLOSSUM L. AND NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA SCHOTT.
The experiment was done twice, during August to October 1983, and March to May 1984.
Adding 8-HQC and sucrose (150 ppm + 2 ¼% or 300 ppm + 2¼%, respectively) to the holding solution of Ruscus or Nephrolepis was most effective in improving the vase-life compared with the controls (tap water).
In general, adding sucrose alone to the holding solution of Ruscus stems resulted in a shorter vase-life.
Maximum average vase-lives of cut Ruscus and Nephrolepis were 85.9 and 23.4 days for the first cut, and 56.6 and 33.5 days for the second, respectively.
Adding 150 or 300 ppm 8-HQC combined with 2¼% sucrose was more effective in increasing final fresh weight of cut Ruscus stems, in both experiments.
On the contrary, these treatments had no effect, on either the fresh or dry weights of Nephrolepis cut-leaves.
The effects of 8-HQC and sucrose on the microorganisms in the holding solution of Ruscus and Nephrolepis were also investigated.
