Abstract
Flowers of "Carina" roses cut 3 cm below the bud were placed in water or the solution of 4% sucrose plus 200 ppm 8-HQS and supplemented either with ethephon or BA in conc. 10 or 50 ppm.
Lower cytokinin concentration tended to prolong vase-life while the higher doses of both hormones hastened flower wilting.
Use of the preservative little affected the level of soluble proteins in petals but nearly doubled their contents in ovaries.
BA tended to increase protein content in petals and ovaries of water-held roses while 50 ppm of ethephon increased protein level in petals and induced a considerable decrease in ovaries.
Generally, BA acted inversely to ethephon on invertase and the effects of both hormones were opposite in petals as compared to ovaries, both in the sugar-fed and non-fed roses i.e. cytokinin increased enzyme activity in petals and decreased it in ovaries while ethephon diminished invertase activity in corollas and enhanced it in flowers supplied with sucrose.
