Abstract
Peach and plum were already introduced by individual European planters in Indonesia before the second world-war, in restricted areas and with a very small variation of pre-war varieties.
Apple was also introduced in this period and after 40 years of trial and error became a big success.
On the other hand peach and plum are practically abandoned, while their potential look fairly positive.

The Konto River Project – a watershed management project located in East Java, Indonesia is for the main part highland.
In its attempts to reduce soil erosion, among other the introduction of temperate fruit trees is considered to be important.
The introduction of new crops is also in line with the policy of the Indonesian government to diversify agricultural production and to develop non-oil commodities.

In February 1986 research was initiated to introduce 17 cultivars of peach, nectarine, plum and apricot.

Information regarding the preliminary experiences in the introduction of these temperate fruit trees are described in this paper.
