Abstract
For Australian markets the most desirable fruit quality characteristics required in low chill stonefruit cultivars (in order of importance) are size, colour and firmness.
Besides suitable site and cultivar selection, many pre-harvest management factors affect fruit quality.
The key management factors which must be considered are: use of growth retardants, flower and fruit thinning, training and trellising systems, summer pruning, cincturing, nutrition and irrigation as well as the manipulation of flowering and fruit development period through the use of dormancy release chemicals.
With low chill stonefruit economic viability will be maintained by producing high quality fruit per unit management input.
