Abstract
Successful production of apples under tropical conditions was described in 1943. Since about that time commercial culture has been carried out in the Batu region of Java, Indonesia.
Peaches have been cultivated under tropical conditions near Colonia Tovar, Venezuela over a similar period.
Grapes have been grown commercially under tropical conditions in India, Venezuela and Thailand for decades.
In all cases, culture occurs in the absence of adequate chilling and is dependent on inducing a continuous succession of growth cycles, thereby avoiding dormancy.
Experience in Indonesia, Philippines, Venezuela and subtropical areas has clarified the cultural practices essential for success.
Guidelines are available for the selection of other potential production areas in the tropics.
