Abstract
A hot summer season or high night temperature induces abnormal color development, low sugar and low organic acid content in berries of grape ‘Kyoho’, a black and very large-fruited cultivar.
In this study the effects of night cooling, to 15°C and 20°C when night temperatures reach 25°C, on some characteristics of the grape ‘Kyoho’ were examined.
Studies in the glass house examined vine growth, fruit quality, partitioning of dry matter, apparent photosynthesis and respiration.
Night cooling retarded vine growth, but increased a percentage of dry matter and the distribution of dry matter to the berries.
The results show that night cooling promotes assimilate translocation and supresses respiration losses of assimilates.
