Abstract
Soluble solids concentration (SSC) was used to assess physiological fruit maturity in parental and F1 kiwifruit populations.
All vines showed a similar pattern of fruit maturation, although the timing and magnitude of these patterns differed between seedlings.
Flowering time was not correlated with harvest SSC in the parental population.
Crosses between an early flowering, early fruiting, small fruited population (CCH1) and ‘Hayward’ produced F1 families intermediate between their parents in harvest SSC, final SSC (after storage and ripening) and fruit weight.
Harvest SSC was significantly correlated with final SSC. Familial differences were apparent within the F1 population for fruit weight, harvest and final SSC. SSC was not a good indicator of sweetness or flavour acceptability.
Large fruited, early maturing vines were selected and are undergoing further evaluation.
