CROP MANAGEMENT OF KIWIFRUIT VARIETY ‘HAYWARD’ IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Development of kiwifruit production in Western Australia has been limited by difficulties with producing consistent crops of the main variety ‘Hayward’. The cropping performance of this variety has significantly improved with the use of hydrogen cyanamide.
The adoption of continuous overhead canopies has improved fruit quality, particularly in relation to sun damage.
The use of various crop management practices, including hydrogen cyanamide, target winter pruning and flower thinning, promise to make crop management more precise than with other perennial fruit crops.

The maturity of kiwifruit produced in Western Australia appears to be ahead of many other Southern Hemisphere countries and with yields in excess of 40 tonnes per hectare, the industry has the potential to supply markets in South East Asia.
