Abstract
A two-part experiment was carried out for three years in northern Italy.
In the first part, the recently proposed training systems Geneva double curtain (GDC), free-spindle and V-trellis were tested against the standard T-bar, and in the second the latter was assessed against the modified T-bar.
All the trials were performed on ‘Hayward’ vines with the same bud load/ha.
In the first trial each training system had a different number of vines/ha: GDC = 1000, free-spindle = 1500, V-trellis = 1800, T-bar = 700 while in the second both standard and modified T-bar had the same planting density (700 vines/ha).

The main results showed that both GDC and standard T-bar produced higher fruit yields than the free-spindle and V-trellis systems.
Moreover, recorded fruit weight and commercial grading indicated that the former two perform better than the latter two training systems.
The modified T-bar appears to have certain advantages over standard T-bar: yield/ha and fruit weight were similar but the former had a much higher number of renewal canes originating from the cordon.
