Abstract
Regeneration of kiwifruit plantlets was obtained in our laboratory from in vitro cultures of nodes, leaves, sepals, ovaries, anthers, and stamen filaments.
We also succeeded in regenerating plants from embryos and endosperm of mature seeds of fruitful male ‘Hayward’ plants harvested in orchards of South-western France.
Study of such regenerated plants has been carried on in the field.
The use of of sex markers is of high interest in kiwifruit breeding programmes; the permanence of biochemical links between sex and peroxidases was detected in stem tissue cultures.
Such results led to a practical application involving the use of a simple peroxidase test, performed on cicatricial stem callus, for sex screening of seedlings.
