Abstract
Leafrollers (Tortricidae) were the first insects to be recognised as pests of kiwifruit, Actinidia deliciosa, in New Zealand.
In 1976 caterpillars of Stathmopoda (Oecophoridae) were also found.
Early work established the species involved, and that damage peaked soon after flowering.
The relative importance of each species was related to its abundance, and whether it primarily fed on fruit or foliage.
Other caterpillars were insignificant as pests.

This review discusses recent taxonomic changes, especially those resulting from pheromone studies of the leafrollers which have revealed cryptic species, and information on the distribution of these species.
As well, a marked increase in the importance of the black-lyre leafroller, Cnephasia jactatana, has been shown by more recent monitoring, while Epiphyas postvittana has decreased in significance.
