Abstract
Increasing demand for kiwifruit plants stimulated in vitro multiplication studies.
Explants from inactive lateral buds and growing shoot tips produced at 25 C from originally leafless hardwood shoots (cv.
Hayward) were compared.
Collected in January, shoots had experienced 200 hours natural chilling (<7 C) plus additional chilling (6 C) for 0, 350 and 700 hours.
Cultured initially in initiation and later in proliferation media, lateral bud explants produced more proliferating shoots and greater dry weight (DW) increments than shoot tip explants, especially after 900 hours chilling.
The ratio of callus DW/shoot DW was always higher for lateral buds, but less so after 900 hours chilling.
Fully chilled (still inactive) lateral bud explants were best for multiplication.
