Abstract
The response of kiwifruit to climate was examined in three ‘Hayward’ orchards in the Piedmont region at 350, 450 and 665 m a.s.l.
The bud burst temperature varied from 11.2 to 9.3 and 8.8 C. The frost-free period ranged from 239 to 271 days (average 254). A short growing season was observed in only one year at 350 m a.s.l.; in case of delayed bud development, careful timing of harvesting is required to prevent yield loss.
Suitability to kiwifruit culture appeared best defined by the heat summation calculated on the bud burst temperature of the site, instead of the 10 C or 8 C standard bases, due to the different lengths of the growing period.
The heliothermic and heliothermic/rain indices, applied to kiwifruit culture, do not seem as satisfactory as they are for other crops.
