Abstract
Interspecific crosses between Actinidia species have been attempted as initial steps in a kiwifruit breeding programme. Actinidia deliciosa (A.Chev.) C.F. Liang et A.R. Ferguson, and Actinidia chinensis Planch. are considered to be closely related, although hybrids between them have been difficult to produce.
Fruit development often occurs, but seeds are usually inviable.
The results of experimental crosses, and a detailed examination of pollination, fertilisation and early seed development are presented with the aim of determining the barriers to hybridisation.
Pollen tube growth and fertilisation were observed, but genotype barriers affect the numbers of fertilisations.
Post fertilisation events showed that endosperm development occurs but divisions of the zygote are very rarely initiated.
Strategies to overcome these barriers are discussed.
