Abstract
Bacterial blossom blight of kiwifruit caused by Pseudomonas spp. can lead to loss of buds and flowers.
Bacterial numbers were found to progressively increase on healthy buds and flowers during the flowering season.
Population levels of Pseudomonas spp. were directly related to disease severity.
Bacterial counts and scanning electron-microscope studies both showed dense colonisation of bacteria on stamens and pistils of diseased flowers whereas fewer bacteria were found on healthy floral parts.
A significant increase in disease incidence followed frequent rain during flowering.
