Abstract
Bud development during the leafless period in fruit trees is divided into four distinct periods.
These periods are: (1) A period of fall bud development during which buds of species or cultivars develop their buds at different rates; (2) an endodormancy period during which the trees must receive a certain amount of chilling to be able to break dormancy; (3) a heat requiring period before spring growth begins; (4) the actual resumption of growth.
This paper focuses on biochemical changes occurring during resumption of growth.
Biochemical changes described include: carbohydrate, DNA, polyamine, membrane lipid, ethylene, ethylene precursor metabolism, enzyme activities of several reducing enzyme systems such as ascorbic acid and gluthathione reductases, activities of activated oxygen handling enzymes, catalase, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and superoxide dismutase.
