Abstract
In the Highlands of Yemen A.R. the mid-chilling apple cultivars have difficulty to grow and to produce due to the low accumulation of chilling.
In 1988 and 1989 hydrogen cyanamide was introduced in experimental trials in order to resolve the constraints above mentionated.
The application of this compound was done on 14 mid-chilling apple cultivars in two different timings and with two concentrations (1% and 2%) during two years.
The results have pointed out that the buds mean burst increases in all the cultivars when it is compared with the control.
In the earliest treatment the concentration of 2% is more efficient and in the latest there are no differences between the effects of the two concentration, but in some cases the compound can destroy the swelling buds.
The cultivars showed different responses in both of the years mainly better in 1989 than 1988. The experiment have demonstrated the usefulness of hydrogen cyanamide to break the endo-dromancy in Yemeni climate conditions and the need to select the right spraying time according to the chilling accumulation of the trees.
