CHILLING AFFECTS FLOWERING OF PRIMOCANE-FRUITING ‘HERITAGE’ RED RASPBERRY

Abstract
The effect of chilling on growth and development of ‘Heritage’ red raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) primocanes was studied.
Tissue-cultured plants were grown in 10-liter containers, flowered, and pruned back to the soil line.
Subsequently plants were given from 0 to about 1,050 chill units (CU) and then returned to a heated greenhouse with a 16-h photoperiod for eight months.
Growth of plants with 0 or low CU was either short with rosetted leaves or indeterminate.
One plant developed several flower buds after more than 7 months in the greenhouse.
Plants that received about 500 CU grew 3 m high and flowered after 6 months.
Plants given more than 750 CU flowered in less than 4 months when the primocane had 25 to 30 nodes.
Results of this study suggest that the sequence of growth and development in primocane-fruiting raspberries is effected strongly by low temperature exposure prior to shoot emergence.
To induce flowering in ‘Heritage’ primocanes within 4 months in the greenhouse, plants must be given a minimum of 750 CU prior to cane emergence.
