Abstract
Poland has been occupying for many years the top position in the world in currant production, mainly black currants.
The production increased rapidly, due to the introduction of new cultivars and technology of cultivation and fruit harvesting.
Untill now, the cultivars such as: Ojebyn, Roodknop, Titania and Ben Lomond have been recently grown commercially on all plantations in our country.
Besides well-known advantages these cultivars have also some defects such as: too strong growth (cv.
Titania), poor processing quality of fruits (Roodknop, Ojebyn, Titania), fruit "drop off" (Roodknop) and high susceptibility to powdery mildew (Roodknop, Ben Lomond).

The breeding work on black currants was started in 1954 (Pluta, Zurawicz, 1993) but, since 1986, new and extended breeding programme has been carried out at the Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture in Skierniewice.
The main aim of the recent programme is to release own black currant cultivars, which will be well-adapted to our climate conditions, prolific and more suitable for fruit processing and mechanisation.
In 1992 two Polish cultivars: Bona (92/69A) and Ceres (76/69A) were released and registered on the National List.
