Abstract
In 1986 fourteen commercial cultivars of Rubus idaeus L. (Chilcotin, Fairview, Glen Clova, Haida, Malling Admiral, Magnific Delbard, Meeker, Nootka, Rossana, Selezione 1401, Selezione 1415, Skeena, Sumner and Willamette) were introduced in Central Italy at an elevation of 700 m a. s. 1. and planted in an orchard with 3 m between rows.
From 1987 to 1992 the cultivars were evaluated for their suitability to the soil and climatic conditions of Central Italy, carrying out observations on phenological phases, and vegetative and productive parameters.
Usually, the beginning of sprouting occurred around March 10 and April 10 with significant variations between years and cultivars; cvs Willamette and Sumner were the earliest, whereas ‘Meeker’ was the latest.
Full bloom occurred between May 20 and June 10; "Willamette" and ‘Glen Clova’ were the firsts and ‘Selezione 1415’ the last to flower.
For all cultivars, the fruit harvesting period started at end of June and finished in mid August and the earliest and the latest cultivars were the same as those for flowering.
Concerning vegetative activity, cvs Nootka and Glen Clova were vigorous, whereas ‘Haida’ and ‘Skeena’ were weak.
After six years, the highest cumulative fruit production was recorded for ‘Magnific Delbard’ and ‘Glen Clova’; whereas ‘Fairview’ had the lowest.
Among cultivars fruit weight ranged from 2.24 g (cv Haida) to 4.06 g (cv Chilcotin).
