Abstract
In 1984/85 we started a program aimed at breeding new early and late maturing high-quality European plums for fresh consumption.

The following parents were used: Auerbacher, Belle de Paris (Bonne de Bry), Chrudimer, Cacanska rana, German Prune ‘Rinklin’, Opal, Ortenauer, President, French Prune (Prune d’Agen, Prune d’Ente), Richards Early Italian, Ruth Gerstetter, Schwabs, Zimmers, and FAW 1/41 (Zimmers x Italian Prune).

The highest proportion of promising selections resulted from the following combinations:

  • FAW 1/41 x Herman

  • French Prune x Auerbacher

  • President x German Prune ‘Rinklin’

In 1993 we conducted a study on pollen compatibility and fruit set of promising new varieties and selections from abroad.
This study being the basis of a new breeding program which is planned for 1994/95.

The aim of our breeding efforts is the continuity of supply for high quality fresh European plums from late July to early October.
