Abstract
Two main institutes have carried out plum breeding in Norway; Ullensvang Research Station, Substation Njøs and The Agricultural University of Norway, Department of Horticulture.
At Njøs hybridizations were carried out in the 1930’s and the 1950’s, and a new programme was initiated with seed stratification in 1991. At the Agricultural University seedlings were raised in the 1980’s, and seedling evaluation is still carried out.
The main breeding aims has been to obtain better early-season and mid-season cultivars, and so far the early cultivar Edda is the result of the breeding programmes.
Future breeding will focus on the demands from the market for large-fruited, high-quality plums with good keeping ability.
The breeding strategy is to hybridize the most large-fruited cultivars of Prunus domestica, and then by recurrent mass selection try to combine the favourable characters into new cultivars.
