Abstract
The work on the improvement of cultivar range in Yugoslavia and breeding new plum cultivars was started at the Fruit Research Institute at Cacak (Now Fruit and Grape Research Centre) as early as in 1949. For that purpose the method of clonal selection of indigenous cultivars (mostly Pozegaca), introduction, intra- and inter- species hybridization and the induction of mutations by gamma radiation have been employed.

During 44-year period eight cultivars have been developed (Cacanska Rana, cacanska Lepotica, Cacanska Najbolja, Cacanska Rodna, Cacanski Šecer, Valjevka, Valerija and Jelica) and a number of large fruited Pozegaca types have been singled out: type B1-56 (Boricevac), type 6/81 (Milicnica), type 11/81, type 9/72, type 5/81 and others). Most of newly-released cultivars are tolerant of sharka (plum pox) virus.

As sharka spread in the plum-growing regions has been on the increase, after the assessment of sources of resistance in 1980 the programme of hybridization has been focused on breeding resistant and tolerant cultivars, suitable for fresh use and for drying.

Over the 1980–1992 period, more than 5,000 seedlings have been obtained.
The first results indicate the existence of a large number of resistant hybrids in some crosses (about 40). However, in most cases fruit size and quality were not satisfactory.
