Abstract
Apples (cv.
Elstar) were picked on early and optimal harvesting dates and stored at 1.5 °C, in 1% and 5 % oxygen and 0.5 % carbon dioxide.
Ethylene was removed (0 μl/l) or supplied (100 μl/l) during storage.
After 2, 4, 6 and 8 months, ethylene and carbon dioxide production were measured in flow controlled atmosphere without ethylene.
After 1 and 7 days in 20 °C firmness, peel colour, carbon dioxide and ethylene production were measured.
Results indicate that apples from both harvesting-times remained pre-climacterial if stored in 1 % oxygen and 0 μl/l ethylene, established by the low ethylene production and firmness retention.
This suggests a longer storage potential for this variety.
Production of ethylene increased in the 100 μl/l ethylene atmosphere, however more at 5 % oxygen than at 1 % oxygen.
This leads to significant more firmness- and colour-decrease and increased respiration.
This interaction showed that the influence of low oxygen has a combined effect on ethylene production and action.
Influence on ethylene action was quantified by its response on firmness decrease.
In 1 % and 5 % oxygen firmness loss amounts to 2.4 and 6.3 % per month respectively.
