EFFECT OF GIBBERELLIC ACID ON MINNEOLA TANGELO CONDITION AFTER TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

California ‘Minneola’ tangelos were treated with gibberellic acid (GA₃) in a preharvest spray (10 mgl^-1) in October and a postharvest treatment (50 mgl^-1) in the wax at packing.
Early-, mid- and late-season fruit were harvested in January, March, and April for three test shipments.
Upon arrival at Rotterdam (4 to 5 weeks after harvest), the fruit were inspected for condition and stored at 5 °C for 2 weeks, inspected and stored an additional week at 20 °C, and again inspected.
At each inspection, the fruit were evaluated for appearance, calyx condition, aging, puffiness, firmness, and decay.
Particularly for late-season fruit, GA₃-treated fruit had significantly better appearance, fresher calyx, less aging and puffiness, and were firmer than nontreated fruit.
Preharvest GA₃ treatment seemed to be more effective than the postharvest GA₃ treatment.
The combination of pre- and postharvest GA₃ treatment did not have an additive effect.
Decay (< 1%) was negligible for all treatments.
