THE CHARACTERISTIC WEAK GLYCOSIDIC BONDING OF FLAVONOID 5-GLUCOSIDES FROM PRUNUS CERASUS BARK AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE RESISTANCE AGAINST CYTOSPORA PERSOONII

Abstract
The significant difference between the phenolic fingerprint of the bark of susceptible Prunus avium and the more resistant P. cerasus is the occurrence of flavonoid 5-glucosides in P. cerasus. P. avium is characterized by flavonoid 7-glucosides.
In acidic milieu flavonoid 5-glucosides are much more labile than the corresponding 7-glucosides.
Following the observation that the resulting aglycones are more toxic to Cytospora persoonii than glucosides it is supposed that the lability of the flavonoid 5-glucosides of P. cerasus is responsible for the earlier and faster reaction of P. cerasus to an infection with C. persoonii than the more susceptible P. avium.
