Abstract
Cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) catalyses the reduction of hydroxycinnamaldehydes to the corresponding hydroxycinnamyl alcohols (monolignols) which are the monomeric precursors of the complex phenolic polymer lignin.
Recent work in our laboratory suggests that isoforms of this enzyme may play a role in determining the lignin heterogeneity observed in woody angiosperms.
Sequence comparison data of CAD’s from gymnosperms and angiosperms together with molecular modelling studies should allow the controlled modification of CAD substrate affinity and manipulation of lignin monomer composition in transformed plant species.
