DETERMINATION OF CATECHINS AND PROCYANIDINS IN PLANT EXTRACTS – A COMPARISON OF METHODS

Abstract
The colorimetric measurement of catechins and proanthocyanidins after reaction with aldehyde reagents or after releasing anthocyanidins in hot acid solution, respectively, are common methods for estimating the total of these compounds.
However, depending on the individual flavanol mixture the results are sometimes inconsistent because of structure- and solvent-dependent reaction kinetics.
HPLC-separation in connection with post-column-derivatization is shown to be a convenient method for the selective quantification of flavanols.
