Abstract
The induced incorporation of phenylpropanoids into the cell wall is a common response of plant cells to stress such as wounding, infection or elicitation.
The quality and the regulation of this cell wall reinforcement are not well understood, but the basic features are beginning to emerge.
The physiological significance of the reinforcement process is probably not limited to the physical strengthening of the cell wall but likely includes additional functions for survival of the cells under stress conditions.
