Abstract
The effect of infection of fungi (Aspergillus niger, Fomes fomentarius, Heterobasidion annosum, Innonotus obliquus and Phellinus igniarius) on the content of five linear furanocoumarins (bergapten, imperatorin, ostruthol, oxypeucedanin and xanthotoxin) in Angelica archangelica roots was studied.
In vitro infected A. archangelica root discs were found to contain increased level of all furanocoumarin studied.
The ability of the fungi to synthesize furanocoumarins can be ranked as follows: Phellinus igniarius > Heterobasidion annosum > Fomes fomentarius > Innonotus obliquus > Aspergillus niger. Changes in the concentration of the particular furanocoumarins were observed to depend on the time which had elapsed since infection and the kind of the fungus.

The obtained results indicate that bergapten, imperatorin, ostruthol, oxypeucedanin and xanthotoxin play the role of phytoalexins in Angelica archangelica.
