Abstract
The spatial localization of a special cell type within an organized tissue is controlled by diffusible signals from neighbouring cells (Lyndon 1990). Fruit trees show a heavy flavanol accumulation in the fast-growing elongating shoot parts, the frequency and spatial location being highly characteristic of the species (figure 1).
The performed phenols were frequently found in the shoot’s border tissues.
They were likewise located with increasing frequency in the phloem, in the xylem rays, in the primary xylem and in some species, in the entire pith area.
Whilst cell division and elongation decrease down the stem, the synthetic diversity of the maturing cells increases.
This in turn enables them to attain new structures and functions in both apoplast and symplast.
