Abstract
Relative virulence of several wild type strains of Agrobacterium tumefaciens were determined by inoculating stems of axenic shoots of Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki L. cv.
Jiro). Virulence was inferred by the incidence of tumor formation.
Strains A281 and C58 were found to be most virulent, followed by K12. Strains A208 and Ach5 produced no tumors.
More than half of the crown gall tumors showed hormone autotrophic growth, whereas control stem callus failed to survive on hormone-free medium.
All the tumor cell lines with hormone autotrophic growth ability, except for one each of A281 and K12, produced the opines corresponding to the Agrobacterium strains used.
