Abstract
As a first step towards development of Colorado Potato Beetle (CPB) resistant eggplant, the coding region of wild type Bacillus thuringiensis cry3b gene under the transcriptional control of different promoters and terminators was introduced into S. integrifolium and S. melongena. All the 125 transgenic plants screened in the bioassays using CPB larvae showed no detectable effect on larval mortality.
To improve the expression of cry3b gene, its 3′-end region was modified according to the dicot codon usage.
The mutagenized gene (cryM) was cloned into a vector for Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation.

The mutagenized gene (cryM) was cloned into a vector for Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation.
In order to develop an Ac/Ds tagging system, the two transposable elements were introduced into eggplant and S. integrifolium.
