Abstract
Horticulture is the most intensive form of agricultural production, and plant and production control evolve at a high rate, depending on the producer’s competence and often responding to the variable requirements set by the consumer and to a constantly changing market economy.
One very important explanation is that one wants to breed a plant without paying attention to seasons and conditions.
Guaranteed plant production and world trade make more and more demands, not only quantitatively and qualitatively, but also legal quarantine requirements and respect for the environment.
The fast and world-wide spread of plant identities, owing to modern commercial management, also introduces new geo-phytopathological interactions, and requires strong phytosanitary control.
