Abstract
In this study, fruits of cucumber plants (cv.
Alara) grown in perlite under 9 different nutrient conditions containing N and K at combinations of 100, 200 or 300 ppm were used.
Cucumbers harvested on 16 October 1995 were packed into 2 kg perforated polyethylene bags and stored at 13±1°C and 85–90 % relative humidity During storage, weight loss of fruits and changes in fruit colour were determined at three day intervals.
Dry matter content, total soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, fruit firmness, chilling injury symptoms and general appearance scores were determined weekly.
It was concluded that 200–300 ppm K and a maximum of 200 ppm N combined application to the nutrient solution may be responsible for increased shelf life of cucumbers.
