INFLUENCE OF HARVEST TIME ON YIELD OF SOME SWEET PEPPER CULTIVARS GROWN IN GREENHOUSES

Abstract
Two year research results to evaluate the effects of harvest time on yield and morphological behavior in some sweet pepper cultivars are reported. 44 and 39 sweet pepper hybrid cultivars were tested under unheated greenhouse conditions respectively in 1994 and 1995. For each cultivar two harvesting times were considered: green and yellow or red fruits ripening stages.
Results showed a great influence of harvesting time on yield and fruit characteristics.
In particular, green ripening harvests increased yield because of the higher number of fruits per plant.
In contrast, harvesting at the yellow or red ripening stage increased mean weight, lenght, basal diameter and mesocarp thickness of marketable fruits.
In the first trial, some cultivars (i.e. 25 % of total) showed no yield difference between the two ripening stages.
Among cultivars, ‘Kantor’, ‘Mayata’, ‘Golda’, and ‘Safari’ gave, in the 2 years, good results and they seemed promising for both green and full ripening harvests.
