FACTORS AFFECTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF STENOSPERMIC GRAPE (VITIS VINIFERA) EMBRYOS CULTURED IN VITRO

Abstract
New cultivars of good quality, high yield and large berry size is the main purpose of grape breeding.
In stenospermic grapes premature abortion of developing seeds occurs.
With in ovulo embryo culture, it is possible to use seedless vines as females.
The aim of this work was to study the influence of the cultivar genotype, harvest date and the proceeding place of the cultivar on the percentage of plants/seeds obtained with the embryo rescue technique in our laboratory in order to planning the future hybridisations.
The percentage of plants/seeds was affected mainly by the cultivar used as parents.
The harvest date is one of the most important factor that affects the results and varies according to the analysed cultivar.
The majority of the cultivars exhibited plants/seeds percentages below 5 %, including Malvinas, in spite of the large of its seeds.
Nevertheless, Perlon, C.G. 234250, C.G. 102011 were excellent female parents, with a plant/seed percentage over 20 %. The cultivars Fantasy, Flame Seedless, Crimson, Superior, Malvinas and Sultanina were always below 5 %. For this reason it is recommended to used them as male parents.
