Abstract
Grape breeding for colour and winter hardiness in the Niagara Peninsula of Ontario has produced several selections, with good wine quality and exceptional colour levels.
Expressed as mg/100 g cyanidin 3-galactoside, the mean values of Vintinto, Colobel, Vincent, Lomanto, Rubired and Cabernet Sauvignon are 603, 528, 427, 421, 283 and 97 respectively.
Vincent and Vintinto, both Vineland introductions, have improved winter hardiness over Colobel and Lomanto, the previous industry standards.
In addition, Vintinto has a vinifera-like characteristic of containing only monoglucosidic anthocyanins.
More breeding work is planned to further improve both winter hardiness and disease tolerance of these non-labrusca flavoured, highly pigmented breeding lines.
