UTILIZATION OF VITIS RIPARIA FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW WINE VARIETIES WITH RESISTANCE TO DISEASE AND EXTREME COLD

Abstract
Vitis riparia is an extremely cold hardy species of grape.
Crosses at the University of Minnesota between V. riparia and French hybrids or V. vinifera wine cultivars have resulted in very cold hardy and disease resistant seedlings, some of which also have good wine potential.
After a vineyard temperature of-38°C in February 1996, the bud survival of these breeding selections was compared with that of existing varieties known for their high level of cold hardiness.
The new V. riparia derivatives demonstrated much greater survival than the existing varieties, with the best selections, e.g.
MN 1131 (V. riparia x ‘Seyval’) having up to 88% live nodes.
