EFFECTIVENESS OF BIPARENTAL CROSSES ON BREEDING TABLE GRAPES IN BRAZIL

Abstract
In Brazil, the first grapevine crosses were made in 1889 but a consistent program was the one initiated by Santos Neto, at the IAC, in 1942 and extended for almost half century.
The objective of this work was to report the first results with progenies obtained from about 300 crosses performed from 1978 to 1985, evaluating its effectiveness through some parameters.
The choice of parents was towards the two main cultivars of the Brazilian table grape industry, Niagara Rosada and Italia.
Madalena and Jd 930 were chosen for their marked muscat flavor.
A Dona, Maria, Iracema and Aurora were included due to their seedlessness.
Large numbers of American grapes or their hybrids were also used as parents.
The evaluations were done for the characteristics: a) number and weight of clusters; b) flavour, texture, colour, weight and soluble solids content of berries; c) adherence to pedicel and presence of seeds; d) plant cycle.
The final number of plants established in the field in relation to the number of seeds ranged from 16.8% to 63.1%. The selection rate in the widest sense, i.e., in relation to the total number of plants, varied from 2.2% to 100%, probably due to the great diversity of the parents.
These results represent well what happens in long term studies of crosses and grapevine selection.
They were 300 crossings along eight years, using about 15,000 seeds.
More than 6,000 seedlings were obtained, and almost 2,000 plants were established in the field.
American grapes or their hybrids used as parents did not influence the parameters of seedling utilization and the selection rate.
On the other hand, they negatively influenced the grape quality of the descending genotypes.
From the plants established in the field, 101 genotypes were selected and multiplied vegetatively for the first field trials.
Madalena, Patrícia, Italia and A Dona were shown good progenitors.
