Abstract
The table grape industry is well established in Egypt.
Its practical vision emphasizes heavily the importance of ensuring quality varieties and pesticide-free grapes that meet international market expectations.
Grape varieties available in Egypt are not staying apace of those gaining acceptance in foreign markets.
Improvement projects extensively started in the early 80’s with the introduction of about 50 varieties from California.
All varieties were subjected to thorough examination and complete evaluation in the new lands of sandy soils, Delta and the Valley.
The promising ones that are suitable for export purposes were released to the grape growers.
Expansion in growing of new varieties was fast especially in the reclaimed lands.
The grape map now in Egypt have many varieties of early ripening in May, mid season in July and late ones up to October.
In selection of the grape varieties, the subject of widening the genetic base of grapes grown in the country was of great importance.
The varieties growing extensively at present include, Thompson seedless, Flame seedless, Ruby seedless, Superior seedless, Early Superior seedless, Perlette, Emperor, Cardinal, Queen and Romi Red.
