THE INBREEDING IN GRAPEVINE (VITIS VINIFERA L.) GENETIC IMPROVEMENT

Abstract
The new vine varieties are being developed principally by hybridization.
The inbreeding (self-pollination) is used mainly for genetic analysis.
Selecting the elite seedlings in the first self-pollinated progeny (I1) of the hybrid forms we aimed at proving our hypothesis for the possibility of using the inbreeding in grapevine genetic improvement.
The hypothesis is based on the recessive character of certain especially valuable economic traits and the genetic transgression expressed during vine self- pollination.
To attain this objective we subjected Hybrid 3/32, developed by crossing Bolgar (Dattier de Beyrouth) and Alphonse Lavallée, to self-pollination.
The investigation during the last 10 years proved that the inbreeding is a preferential method compared to hybridization in the case of looking for recessive traits such as seedlessness, cold and disease resistance etc.
Self-pollination causes genetic transgression with very high biological and economical effect similar to that of heterosis in hybridization because of the transition of the polymeric genes from heterozygous into homozygous state.
The new early ripening table grape variety Velica, one of the best forms developed by self- pollination, is a remarkable genotype with its very big and beautiful cluster (560 g), very large (14 g) and well shaped berries with two seeds and excellent taste.
