CLONAL SELECTION THROUGH THE STUDY OF AGRONOMICAL AND AROMA VARIABILITY IN TWO GEWURZTRAMINER POPULATIONS

This research was focused in investigating two Gewürztraminer populations with different origin and cultivated in two areas of Trentino-Alto Adige (in NE Italy). Studies about the productive behaviour, the must qualitative parameters and the enological aptitude were conducted for four years (1994–1994) on around 50 genotypes.
The healthy condition of the selected material was checked for at least two years through ELISA test.
Some wines, representing the highest organileptic variability, were analysed by gas chromatography both for free and bound aroma fractions.
Some biotypes showed interesting differences as for agronomical performances and analytical and sensorial profiles of wines.
In both checked populations only a few number of biotypes (both healthy and affected by viruses) showed always varietal typicality, whose score in aromatic sensory profile was mostly connected to the vintage and concentration of certain aroma compounds (e.g. geraniol and linalool) both as free and bound forms.
It was confirmed that the profile of bound forms well discriminated the aromatic and neutral genotypes.
