Abstract
A walnut cultivar study started in 1993 at SCDP Vâlcea (Fruit Growing Research-Extension Station Vâlcea). The aims of this study together with the breeding program are to introduce cultivars and valuable selections for walnut culture in the Oltenia region and even for the entire Romania. From 1993 walnut cultivar trials were established almost every year. The results concerning the growth and development of walnut cultivars planted in 1995 are presented in this paper. A number of 17 walnut cultivars and selections were compared (10 from Romania, 3 from U.S.A., 2 from France, one from Germany and one from Bulgaria). The observations carried out were referring to the flowering phenology, the growth behaviour, occurrence of diseases and CLRV status, precocity of producing first fruits, etc. Among the studied walnut cultivars and selections ‘Hartley’, ‘Velnita’ and ‘Ciumesti’ emphasised a good behaviour during the first years after planting in the Vâlcea conditions.
